In Greek mythology, before Pandora, all of mankind lived in paradise without any woes. Pandora ("gifted") was the first woman. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to make her as part of the punishment of mankind for Prometheus' theft of the secret of fire. According to the myth, Pandora's curiosity led her to open a container that she was supposed to keep closed, thereupon, releasing all the evils of mankind — greed, vanity, slander, envy, pining. However, the last thing that came out of the box hope which was shown in the form of a dove.
So to open Pandora's box is to release all sorts of chaos which must be dealt with in a given situation with the spirit of hope that they can, with difficulty, be managed.

And instead of eating the forbidden fruit, she opened a forbidden box that contained all the evils of the world. The reference usually means that you have done something to bring unintended consequences upon yourself.
