I am just seeing if anyone has any "homemade type" remedies instead of an antibiotic for a sinus infection. My 13 yr old son has been having a congested nose for few days to a week and I just noticed this morning that when he blew it it was sorta yellow. not greenish yet, I have been giving him cold medicine, not too much just maybe a dose a day and it seems to have kept it at bay. But just curious to see in anyone knows of anything else to do to kept it from turning into a full blown sinus infection.

I had the same thing happen to me just a week or so ago. I was really phlemy and it was backed up into my ears, my cheeks, my forehead, my throat... basically my entire face hurt!! Then my molars began hurting... NOT cool. I basically took some GSE (grapefruit seed extract) in some water and lots and lots of probiotics. I'm pregnant so there wasn't too much I could do. It went away in a couple of days, maybe as much as 3 or 4. Just monitor your mucous color though. Anything other than clear (green, yellow, etc) means you have an infection. Then you should go see your Dr.... but I never do. I don't believe in that stuff anyway. Only in extreme cases should antibiotics be used.

If the sinus infection is viral don't use antibiotics. Those only work on bacterial infections. My husband is a long time sinus infection sufferer and usually gets antibiotics that don't help.

He uses ibuprofen for the pain, irrigates his sinuses with saline sprays (salt water), eats foods that are naturally good at combating viruses/bacteria such as garlic, oregano, goldenseal... Hope this helps.

For children* from herbs2000.com:
Children affected by sinusitis can be treated using a combination herbal tea containing a tablespoon of the fenugreek herb, a tablespoon of the thyme, a single tablespoon of the rose hip, and finally half a tablespoon of the licorice herb as a sweetener and active ingredient. (*all of their information on herbs includes age appropriate dosages where applicable). Look at the site for additional remedies for kids. There is so much helpful information to be found, that doesn't require taking drugs.

Here is some info from the emedicinehealth.com that is similar to what my husband does:

Self–Care at Home-
Home care can help open the sinuses and alleviate their dryness.

Promote drainage:
Drink plenty of water and hydrating beverages. Hot tea is often recommended.

Inhale steam two to four times per day by leaning over a bowl of boiling hot water (not while the water is on the stove) or using a steam vaporizer with a towel over the head and bowl to prevent the escape of the steam. Inhale the steam for about 10 minutes. Taking a hot, steamy shower may also work. Mentholated preparations, such as Vicks Vapo–Rub, can be added to the water or vaporizer to aid in opening the passageways.

Thin the mucus: Expectorants are drugs that help to expel mucus from the lungs and respiratory passages. They help to thin mucous secretions, enhancing drainage from the sinuses. The most common is guaifenesin (contained in Robitussin, for example). Over–the–counter (OTC) liquid cough medications or prescription tablets can also combine decongestants and cough suppressants to reduce symptoms as well as to eliminate the need for the use of many medications. Read label ingredients to find the right combination of ingredients or ask the pharmacist for help.

Relieve pain: Pain medication such as ibuprofen (Motrin and Advil are examples), aspirin, and acetaminophen (Tylenol is in this category) can reduce pain and inflammation. These medications help to open the airways by reducing swelling.

Hi kmdivy.
Use a '''natural nasal spray''' made with salt and baking soda. The recipe for this home remedy is 1/2 cup water, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a pinch of baking soda. Make sure that you use really clean bottled water or filtered water, otherwise you could make things worse. Shake the mixture well and put into a clean nasal spray bottle. This is also an excellent home remedy for allergies. You can use this nasal spray several times a day; it is surprisingly effective as well as cheap!

Vitamins, minerals and food supplements make great home remedies for sinus infections and of course they will also help to prevent them.

Vitamin C is very good. To prevent and treat sinus infections are citrus (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, lemons), kiwi, cabbage, broccoli, strawberries, raspberries and black berries. Vitamin C is a good natural decongestant and will help to dry up inflamed nasal passages due to colds and sinus infections.

Another very important supplement is vitamin A (not beta carotene). It helps to keep your skin and mucus membranes healthy. Be sure to purchase a supplement that is derived from a natural source (usually fish oil, synthetic vitamin A is not recommended). Natural vitamin A is found in eggs, dairy products, liver and some fish.

Several minerals are important in keeping your immune system in top shape as well. Zinc is the most important of these home remedies. Another little known but very valuable home remedy supplement is NAC or n-acetyl cysteine, which is a powerful antioxidant that is a form of the amino acid cysteine.

A few other immune system home remedies to consider are raw garlic, flaxseed and flaxseed oil, echinacea, grapeseed extract and chlorella/spirulina. Don’t forget about fresh raw fruits and vegetables. Raw foods are very healthful.

I too have heard salt and water, that you can irrigate your sinuses with that. Afrin make it for ease of use or youcan make your own. I woudlrather though you look this up on the web, I don't have sinus trouble and I would not want to steer you wrong. However I have read and heard this is a remedy.

It becomes an infection when it backs up and not let out. I use a steamer (or cold air humidifier) at night, have the house humid during the day, inhale steamy washcloths. Anything that will keep the sinuses moist and not dry out or back up.

I have boiled a large pot of water on the stove with Vick's solution for steamers. It makes the whole house smell like menthol, but it's not bad. Everyone breaths better!

All of this can help...but if it becomes infection, 2 weeks with or without antibiotics, I have found, ends it.

Apparently inhaling salt and water is an excellent way to help with siunus infections. I think its best to use rock salt dissolved in water. A friend used to literally sniff it from a saucer but i have used an old nasal spray bottle which worked well when I had a go.

Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water whenever you have a cold, or plugged sinuses. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes then blow your nose into a tissue.
