I joined Demon a year ago and they have capped my broadband now so its even slower than a 56k modem. I am supposed to get an 8mb connection but because I downloaded too much they have capped it for a month from 10am to 10pm I cannot even watch a news story thats streamed. When I joined Demon they had no fair usage policy and that was why I went with them but a few months into my contract they sent me a new one which included a fair policy usage. I am pretty sure you have to be with them for 1 year before you can cancel your contract. you could phone the helpline and ask them. 0800 027 3737

I am thinking I may be better off finding a new provider.

you will find if you read the terms and conditions that the 8mb is the maximum speed and the rest depends on your exchange and can be down to your own internal cabling etc.as far as the contract most isps will usually let you leave with no problems and dont charge for cancellation, call them up and ask them,if you are uk then i would recommend virgin media.i use it personally and my old provider was giving me around 3.8mb on a 8mb package,i changed to virgin media and allways connect now at between 7.8 and 8.2 mb and the service has been excellent.call your isp and tell them of your low performence they may be able to improve it if not then ask them what will happen if you change providers.good luck.

many contracts come with a minimum 12 month commitment, if you cancel in less than that time, you may have to pay a cancellation fee, the good news for a smaller fee chances are you can migrate to another company as long as tell the existing at the same time

No, not if you are tied to a 12 month contract. You can still go with another provider, but you will have to pay off Demon with the remaining months left.
