I just had to clean up a hairball and thought of this. Why does dog barf have odor and cat barf doesn't?

I think it depends on what they're barfing up. A hairball is basically just that, hair, and usually comes up with a bit of stomach fluids and such - would smell great close-up, I'm sure, but not too bad. If dogs barf, it's mostly partly-digested food, plus whatever it was that made them barf, so naturally it'd smell more.

I'm sure if a cat barfed due to illness it would be just as bad (though probably a smaller amount, since cats are smaller than most dogs.)

Because cat's are generally cleaner and more precise about what they eat, especially if they're spoiled house cats. Dogs... will eat anything.
