as you are only networking 2 computers you will only need a patch cable to run from one to the other, many ebay sellers have such cables for nearly nothing ,once you connect your 2 pcs together you will just need to run the network setup wizard that is built into xp and it will do the rest itself.you could take the way route and buy a router which would allow you to expand your network at a later date but then you would have to have most likely a different modem as most modems nowadays are usb.if you dont plan on having more than the 2 pcs on your network then go for the first option it is quick simple and does the job well straight from network port to network port.the only thing i would also advise is have the modem connected to your desktop pc that way you can take the laptop where you like if you need to move it.it really is quite simple and windows xp does it all for you.

All you need is a router either a hardwired (ethernet pluged or wireless) since you have a laptop you might want to get a router that has both (4-ethernet and a wireless also) They are very easy and straight forward to setup. Now if you want to share files you must make sure both computers are on the same workgroup name. right click my computer and go to properties, then computer name and look for the workgroup name if they are the same then your ok. Then double click my computer and right click your C drive and go to sharing and security then share the drive on both computers and you should be able to share files between the 2 computers...Thanks

easiest way is to buy yourself a router, this sits between you broadband connection and your PC's - so PC's talk to the router and the router talks to the broadband.

few desicions you need to make to get the correct router.
1. How are you PC's going to connect to it - by cable or by wireless connection (or both) - if so then you want a wireless one.
2. How will router connect to broadband
2 types here one that your current modem plugs in or one that has a modem built in (prefered) - make sure you get the correct one.

then it is just a case of installing it - about half hour
