I am a teacher and your question is too complex to be answered in the limited space here but I will try. Currently we have more on-ground than online classes and everyone likes it that way. However, we cannot afford to ignore the online student population if we want to stay in business. Eventually (in 10 or 20 years), we may have more on-ground than online classes.

I agree with the previous answer and as a teacher would like to add:
- online teaching is part of the curriculum because everyone needs to become computer literate to survive the future.
- the two major disadvantages are that students do not check internet sources but simply copy and paste anything that seems to suit as an answer but anybody can publish anything, unchecked, unverified, often biassed, sometimes an opinion, quite often to promote a certain political, religious or social ideas and students don't evaluate the material properly.
Another disadvantage is that very often students cannot ask questions on parts they don't understand.
I know a number of university lecturers who have stopped attending lectures and try to teach everything by email with handouts as attachments. I think this is a disadvantage to students because they need proper tuition and full access to their lecturers.
