Could be either way. You need to prod a little deeper to know for sure. It could just be a harmless question for all you know - between friends. Maybe tell him the qualities you like in him are your turn ons, without naming him. If he's interested, he'd pick the tab. But this also depends on what you want out of this relationship - a long term commitment, or would you take it as it comes. In case it's for the long term, make sure he knows that you are not looking for a fling here, lest he get the wrong idea and mess up a beautiful friendship.
