Because it is the game we know and love, it is the game we grew up with. Maybe if we grew up on Soccer then we would care, the big boys play football though. It is OUR game. Why do you other people think your sport is better then ours? Isn't it at least partly because you grew up with your sport? I hear so many people who are soccer fans come on here and run down the NFL because they are ignorant of it. I don't know that the NFL is really that much better or more difficult then soccer or Rugby. I never tried either of those sports. I do know Football is a tough sport though and I know it requires intelligence to understand the play and know what to do. This is even at backyard level, not sure I would even want to try understanding it at the NFL level or even NCAA Division 1 level(yeah the other divisions are just as tough but usually not as fast or as tough of players, although the players are just as strong and that in comparison usually.)
Oh and for the record I can't grasp watching soccer. I love hockey though, really a big fan of the Pens in the NHL. Although they give a guy a penalty if he tries to take a dive, one big difference between soccer and hockey if you get caught faking you are punished as well. Hockey doesn't add time to make up for injuries, and soccer just makes up the amount of time they will add at that no offical keeping track or anything. That is just a few differences for people who might want to try to compare the two sports.

Soccer is really tame. Divorced moms think it's the right sport for their precious, unattached kids. "Soccer Moms" is what we call all the single women at the kids tournaments.
Early on, they practice "diving". To watch soccer on the tube is like watching a footrace with grown boys play-acting injuries and falling down as dramatically as they can. While watching, if you get up to fetch a beer or go to the john, you can miss the WHOLE game. 0-1 whooweeee!
Rugby, on television, looks like a mob moving back and forth.
Either game, just wasn't suited very well for television. The NFL plays have a build-up of suspense getting into scoring position and surprises in between the predictable plays.
But, we've got Beckem. And, they brought him over to entice Hispanics. Television doesn't know what to do yet with Hispanics. So, maybe that mixture will create a fan base in America for Foosball.

Put a rugby player in full NFL gear, head to toe, ( and I know rugby players are tough) and then have him take a whack from a guy like Rodney Harrison or Ray Lewis. That's why! The NFL is the greatest game on earth. Plus we americans grew up with it. So if you are not an american I guess you wouldn't understand.

It is the traditional American game. Soccer will never compete with football, baseball, or basketball in this country. And few Americans have even seen a rugby match so the popularity of rugby is even lower than soccer. Either of those two sports will never have much of a following in the US.

Americans may generally think so for whatever reason but the big name teams, coaches or whateva in American Football know which sport is better, or at least which sport produces faster, stronger athletes.
I mean every year you've got some American NFL team coming over to Australia to scope out our star League and Aussie Rules players because of their clear physical and athletic prowess; Rugby League players for their strength, speed and hardiness(NO PADS) and Aussie Rules for their ability to punt a football further than any American player could. So why do NFL scouts come over to Australia, yet NO ONE from Aussie Football wastes their time going over to look at NFL players? You could say that it's because the codes in Australia dont pack as much greens as the NFL. However, it's more likely because real football is played by real men everywhere except America, but the BEST you will only find in Australia and New Zealand! And alot of NFL teams KNOW this...
What does that tell you about the "general thinking" of most Americans? Maybe...they're wrong?

Because it's our game. Give us some credit, though. Most of us think that baseball, basketball, and hockey are all better than Rugby or Soccer, too.
Honestly, it's because we are more familiar with American football. Do you think that all of a sudden we're going to be rational and objective?

because guys don't act like every bone in their body is broke when they get touched. in the NFL guys play with broken bones. there's a lot of strategy in futbol just like any sport, but to me football has more strategy, you got to think, it's not just kicking a ball around. but rugby, now that's a mans sport. those guys are crazy. Aussie football is awesome too. I wish ESPN would bring that back instead of the million repeats of sportcenter or some of the bland talk shows they have.

It's more exciting.
You can watch an entire soccer game and there's only 3 goals.
In football theres rough hits, exciting break aways, exciting punt returns, exciting 4th and 1s, big decicions for the coaches to make when the game is on the line and the clock is ticking, reviews from the refs that your just praying the ref calls it in your teams favor.
I'm getting excited right now just thinking about it.
American Football is just plain Exciting!

Well there isnt any apparent strategy in soccer. You must get the ball to the middle so someone can kick it into the goal...American Football has strategy and even a high school team has a playbook as big as a telephone book.
American Soccer
Lots of strategy vs. no real strategy.
(exciting) (boring)

We hardly ever see rugby and soccer features guys that suffer incredible injuries every time they fall but recover quickly enough to be in on the next "play".
