I believe that is when I first read it. The Inferno is an amazing work, and by all means if a 12 year old is interested in reading it, let him/her! It's surely no more graphic than most trailers for horror movies, and it's much more intelligent.

I really enjoyed the inferno, but I don't know about 12 year olds. Its not really that its inappropriate, but they may have trouble grasping the concepts or understanding the style. I usually use my own schooling as a guide. When I was 12 they wouldn't have given us that book to read. I would place Dante on the same level of difficulty as Shakespeare and I wasn't introduced to that until I was in my sophmore year of high school. If you were planning on giving out the inferno I would suggest that you expect to break each canto down and explain what actually happened in it.

Dante's _Inferno_ is quite graphic in its descriptions of pain and suffering, and very clear about the reasons people are being punished. I think these aspects can appeal to a 12 year old. The poem is very rich, and I doubt that any 12 year old would understand all the nuances of the story -- but I didn't understand it well when I read it at age 22. I would recommend it highly.

Yes. But even for a mature 12 year old, it will be difficult to comprehend. There's a lot of Florentine history and culture wrapped up in it and the dramatic and narrative elements are sometimes hard to ferret out between all the rhetoric.

It will be a challenge, especially if it's in the original Italian. However, I see no reason why a 12 year old of intelligence and application could not appreciate its poetry and themes.

you really have got to be kidding- do you even understand "the divine comedy", which btw is only one of three cantica that make up the entire poem and in turn each of the three cantica are made up of 33 cantos, excluding the introduction- that's a total of 100 versus- you think a 12 year old will comprehend this- try something less challenging- encouraging children to reach is one thing, asking them to engage in the stratosphere is quite another.

Just my opinion, but I would think not unless the child understands the whole concept behind it. It can be rather frightening.
