Hi,

Here are but a handful of suggestions:

Here are a list of things you might want to see or do in Taiwan while you're here!

Things to see:

1. Go and have a look at the Taipei 101, take the lift to the top - the lift is extremely smooth and fast! I recommend going at 5pm (this way you can see the day view, sunset, then the night view).

2. Check out Taipei Main Station, underground there are miles of street stalls selling all sorts of things - a great place to pick up cheap gifts and souvineirs (Check out Taipei city Mall - the best of the undergound malls under Taipei Main Station). Above ground you can check out many stores selling high-tech stuff!

3. National museaum Gu-Gong-Bo-Wu-Yuan, this is Taiwan's largest museaum and is indeed the largest and richest collection of Chinese artifacts and paintings in the world! It's located in the suburbs of Taipei.

4. Night-Markets: in my opinion, they make Taipei the city it is. Try Shih Ling (the biggest). Another 2 great ones are Rao He nightmarket and Tong Hua nightmarket. Try a watermelon juice or a pearl milk tea! Shui Jian bao (dumplings) are great as well. In fact I'd recommend anything - except the smelly dofu (you'll smell it when you pass it).

5. YangMing mountain, this time of year you can see the Sakuras blossom - check my blog! It takes an hour by buss - from Taipei main station and is great. If you want to go to the top of Yangming mountain (qi xing san) then the whole trip will take about half a day. if you want to go to the top - make sure you take plenty of water - but besides that you won't need any specialist equiptment!

6. Go to ZhongXiao don lu - if you want to see all the departement stores.

7. Ximen Ding is a cool place where many fashionable youngsters hang out - you'll also be able to find a lot of manga/ anime stuff here (just like underground Taipei main station).

8. Dan shui - is at the end of the metro line, is a riverside promenade with lots of stores, places to eat and see - worth seeing.

9. Xing Bei Tou has lots of Hot-Spring spas and hotels, you may feel tired after doing everything, why not chill out a bit!

Places to eat:

1. You must try Dim Tai Fung - there's one branch on Xing-Yi road, an other is located in ZhongXiao Don Lu - they do dumplings, steamed buns and other traditional snacks - all fantastic.

2. The night markets of course.

3. ZhongXiao Don-Lu area has plenty of restaurants!

4. If you crave Pizza then check out Alley Cats which is just off Xing-Yi Lu and is considered to be the best pizza in Taipei - the house red wine is great as well!

If I've missed anything out - here are some useful links:

Either way have a great time in Taipei!

NT$200 per day? I hope that's a typo, because NT$200 is only about US$6.80. Food in Taiwan is cheap, but on that small a budget you'll be hard pressed to buy much beyond three basic meals a day. In Taipei, maybe try a night market, like the one in Shilin, for inexpensive items. (But don't be surprised if a lot of the stuff is made in China.) Or the Taiwan Handicrafts Mart near National Taiwan University Hospital. The National Palace Museum has reproductions of some paintings for just NT$50 each, which is a real bargain.

My own prefs:
-taipei 101
-the National Palace Museum
-central station underground mall.
-Taipei zoo
-CKS Memorial Hall or whatever they call it now.
-YanMingShan national park.
-NE Coast Scenic Highway
-BaiShaWan beach.
-ShirLin Night Market
-BeiTou hotsprings area

in no particular order.

local foods that you can try
ones I like:
-Hot Pot (pass on the coagulated blood that many offer with it and you are fine!)
-Taiwanese style Barbeque/ Buffet restaurants (Yakiniku is a chain that does this style)
-Street Fried Chicken (Ji-Pai)
-Street 'Ke-Li-BIng' a kindof thin pancake wrap with anything you can imagine inside. It can be a taco/it can be a sandwich/ it can be an ice cream cone! its awesome any way you eat it!
and of course
SpringRolls (Chun-Juan)
Squid-on-a-stick (BBQ squid on a stick- i prefer it without the sauce so you can get the flavor. MMM tentacles. I used to be afraid of this one but if you like calamari you will like this!)
-not very adventurous but its not back in western countries- the McDonalds rice burger. No bun, just rice and sukiyaki strips of beef. Its pretty good.

If you are feeling gastrically adventurous go for:
-Chicken Feet- (with claws still apparent)
-Pig Snout- (with nostrils still visible)
-Pig Knuckle -(With hooves still apparent)
-Stinky Tofu -(edible if you can handle the smell and wash yourself, your mouth and your clothes after so you have a chance at having friends again. I personally find the smell a mixture of open sewer, pig vomit and garbage repulsive but I took one bite a few years ago and it doesnt taste as bad as it smells)
-Chicken Anus
-The coagulated blood chunks that most hotpots have on the side. you dont want to know how those were made.

and if you can find it -rumours exist but I have yet to find these myself...
dog
cat
rat
roadkill
wild game -most likely the last one in Taiwan!
and other guangdong favorites that some may have dragged up.
I personally havent seen those being openly offered myself, but I have seen stacks of dog cages that mysteriously empty and refill by certain restaurants a few years ago... but not recently nearby my place.
And go for the hotdogs if you want a gastric adventure. Maybe the name is literal... (probably it is the same as back home)

A forumer posted for Taipei:
Taoyuan St Beef noodles – still drooling over the thought of it. Beef is well-stewed, so tender and clear broth is ideal for people like me who love soupy stuff. 15 Taoyuan street, Near Exit 4 of Ximen MRT off Hengyang Rd.
- Chinese pastry – pineapple, green bean and curry type – get from Li Hu at Keelung. Tried the Shanghai Lao Tian Lu but Li Hu is still better. Must try the curry-paste type, pleasantly unique but only 3 days shelf-life.
- 台南碗粿 – A shop just outside Shilin MRT exit 2. After exit, look right. 碗粿 unlike here has some ingredients in it.
- Hu jiao bing (pepper naan) – given it a new name, naan. The way they cooked it, it’s like the Indian naan. Value for $ is the one at Raohe NM, lots of meat and very pepperish. The same one from Shilin NM, the dough is thicker, less meaty and pepperish.
- Pao pao bin (aka smoothies + milk shake together) – Miaokou NM (Keelung) is still better than that at Shilin NM
- oyster omelette, chicken chop – Shilin NM next to Jiantan MRT
- stinky tofu – the pasar malam side of Shilin NM, further away from MRT; has a sit-down place behind stall which is just opposite hu jiao bing stall. Better to eat there as crispy tofu is served on plate with pickles by the side, whilst if u takeaway, everything is in 1 bag and tofu turns soggy.
- dessert like fruit platter on ice, white bittergourd and honey drink are all very refreshing; available from Shilin NM
In any NM, if u do not know which is the popular stall, just look at the queue. Surprising the queue can move pretty fast.

The Jack Nickalus designed golf club is awesome if you are looking for a round or 2...36 hole course (2 x 18).

The local Taiwan Beer is good too...not great, but easy to drink.

Must go to Shih Men Ting, the most popular place where Taiwanese youth shop fashionable goods and try the "Ah Zhong Mee Sua" where crowds just stand in front of the shop and slurpping the hot Noodle soup away. slurp...slurp....Yummy!
