Try washing with hydrogen peroxide. The handy release of oxygen when it contacts organics and or infection should kill those nasty bacteria causing the stink, and lighten up any hair you have on them too. I say that is a reason to be happy. So be happy and STINK NO MORE!

Odor ban first to clean than -Better idea - Someone else mentioned charcoal. I have the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just place a couple of these in car and trunk. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Someone else even said available in England. Definitely worth trying

First clean the area normally with a carpet shampoo. Then if it still smells, go to a pet store and get a product that removes urine and feces smells caused by animals. That contains enzymes which neutralize any biological molecules, of which rancid milk is one. After a thorough shampooing and spraying there won't be any smell.

try spraying lemon juice in there -ever seen Kim and Aggie 'How clean is your house' they always use this as an alternative to room deodoriser - otherwise cut up some lemons and place them in the boot for a day or two so the smell gets into every part of the boot.
good luck.

Spray Febreeze or an equivalent, generic product, available in auto supply stores or with cleaning supplies in other stores.
Add patience.
I had this problem and the spray helped it go away. The foul odor diminished eventually.
