They have started first police station near Madras Harbour in British period, called B1 police station and the secone police station B2 was in law college, and so on and so forth. They put A,B.C, and until V1, V2, V5 recently started etc.. and named for their ruling convenience. It is just like postal code only. The first post office found in chennai 600 001 was near broadway (parrys). And may be there are more than 100 post offices in chennai alone, and the last one they started latestly, i think is in Sholinga nallur 600 119. So 1-119 represents there are 119 post offices in chennai only!

They have a system of identification of police stations, alphabetically followed by a numeral.
