It was a caveman named "Cott". One day while wearing 2 different garments, he noticed that the darker one felt hotter. He spread the word.

Ever since, mankind has silently thanked him. In appreciation of his discovery, a natural fiber was named after him -cotton.

I would guess that ancient humans in prehistoric times would have noticed that black rocks become hotter in sunlight than light gray rocks, but since there's no recorded writing of such things we'll never know who may have first discovered it.
