Computer Science....although some schools actually have Game Development oriented majors......you have to know how to program unless you want to do the graphics then that would be visual communication design....computer science is a good field if you can get through all the b/s because it is probably one of the 3 hardest majors at my school....

the video game market has gotten so big that there are hundreds of specialities that you can pick, some people that help make games don't know how to program, but add other things- (music, artwork, story, etc)
but if its the programming side ya wanna mess with, try buying a game like half-life with source code,or painkiller gold edition. you can create levels and gives ya an idea what it takes. some guys that get really good at it get hired by company that made the code with no fancy degrees:)i think you can find the original counter strike source code free. ----- or do what the other guys said.

Computer science as major, with focus on multimedia and human-computer-interaction. It is very heavy stuff, you need as much mathematics as for a major in physics. Games are the hardest software to develop (with the possible exception of firmware development). That is, if you want to make "real" games like World of Warcraft or Need for speed. If you want to do some office tinekillers like Zuma, you don't need to study at all, just take a course in Flash, but you can't make a living on that.
