It is better to use BOTH.
Some image ads are CPM or site-targeted ads, and if you choose only text ads then you can lose out on this revenue stream.
If you select only image ads, then you will lose out majority of the Adwords advertisers that use only text ads.
You can maximize your income by using both image and text ads format.

It really depends. You will have to experiment to see which works better. Maybe have a test advt variation. Advt A and Advt B. For me text seems to work better. As images sometimes doesnt gel with the overall design and colour scheme. However as long as you work the Ad sizes, colour into your site, it should owrk fine. I prefer to put most of the advt on the first screen. No scroll down or right.

Image ads actract more clicks. So you can select image only.
Adsense for referals also good revenue earning methods.
