I just realized that my cat has trained me. A kitten took up with us right before X-mas and right round then, started ringing the sleighbells hanging on our front doorknob when she wants to go out. Everyone in the family just started opening the door when she would hit the bells, without noticing, she had trained US. And the bells are still on the knob for her...

I aslo have wondered...does she think the sound makes the door open or that we respond to what she is doing?

I used to love playing fetch with my dog Sam a lot.

When he was a puppy though, I'd always do the psych (fake)throw just to see him run around looking for the ball that was still in my hand.

This apparently pissed him off as he got older and he retaliated in the best way ever.

After he realized what I was doing during fetch, he would bring the ball over to me and drop it at my feet. But at the moment I would try to reach for the ball, he'd grab it in his mouth - run across the room - bark in victory and drop it on the floor.

I guess I ended up being the one that had to fetch in the longrun.

Hehehe :))

She probably realizes that if she makes the noise with the bells, then you respond to what she is doing. Animals usually don't take long to figure out an association between a behavior and a response from the owner if they are consistent every time. It is essentially training, just in reverse.

My female cat has figured this out. When I'm eating, she will sit on my leg on the couch and just stare at me, and I of course give her some food, so now she does this every time.

My male cat also has trained me to pet him when he wants, simply by coming over and tapping me with his paw if I'm not paying attention to him. It sounds cute, but at 2 am...believe me...it loses the charm.

LOL Very true! My ferrets have definitely trained me...I have been an owner for quite some time and I have learned that there are just things that you cannot change their mind about!

I am the one that has to work with and around their expectations! Not the other way around. :)

You just can't argue with them. They are too fuzzy and cute.
