When I lived in Malaysia and then in Indonesia, the same question was asked.
Maybe it is a culture thing that they work hard and make good business people.

i for one would disagree with this question. i was first generation born chinese in the UK, west london to be precise and so when my parents first arrived here 27 years ago, they didn't have very much. after the subsequent births of my two younger brothers and sister, we tried to settle down but we had a lack of financial resources. at one point we couldn't afford our own house, and so when i was around 8 or something like that my parents and my younger siblings had to stay at a hotel whilst my mum and dad went to work, in order to provide and feed the family. we were never an affluent or rich family. and from my experience i have never seen, come across or witnessed a rich british chinese family driving expensive cars and living the luxury lifestyle.as for those that are wealthy, well maybe because they have saved up a lot of money or something on the lines of that they inherited the money from their rich, elder relatives

Sheer hard work mixed with savvy. Any Chinese that comes to a western country has the back up of all the other Chinese who live there. They can borrow money to start up on their own, and away they go with the hard work to make it a success. The children always do well at school and uni,s, they have a drive and ambition the west is envious of. I like and respect them. Im a Brit by the way.

My own personal experience is that only the Chinese with money can travel and afford to send their children and bring their families overseas.
In Singapore and Malaysia - people with very flash cars may live in a shanty town like shack. The culture seems to value spending excessively more on a car than on their own home.
Chinese people in the UK who own their own restaurants or medicinal shops are likely to be wealthy - those whom they employ are less likely to be wealthy unless they are related to the owner.

its because of immigration regulations. you have to be rich to get into the uk in the first place, so you will never see the poor chinese because they will be denied a visa. but like someone else said, theyre traveling halfway accross the world. theyre not going to britain just so they can come mow your lawn. its not the exchange rate because one chinese yuan is only worth about $.7, so divide that by 2 and you get pounds. they do save their money though more than british people. and chinese dont typically drink, so think about the money you save there.

I think that is a myth, and if there are wealthy/affluent Chinese people in the U.K, it's probably for a whole number of reasons: they are hard working, have very good business acumen, they are disciplined, principled, decent people, they invest in their communities, their humble, they don't bring ill on themselves, they respect their own aswell as others, they are law abiding. I could go on for a while, but there are just a few reasons as to the success of the Chinese. In short they have a very good broad ethic.

That's not necessarily true. I'm of Chinese - HK heritage myself, and my nationality is British. Like mentioned before, either they or their families have imigrated here for a better life, not to demean themselves by being unsuccessful. But on the other hand, why just base it on one group of people? Plenty of people are rich, and plenty are poor. It's only when you look at a race in particular that it seems odd to you.

I'm not sure this is particularly true, but if it is then it could well be because the sort of people who take the trouble to come half way round the world to an alien country in order to find success are the sort of people who would find success anyway, even in their own culture. i.e. They are not a representative sample of Chinese people but a self-selecting group of people more likely to succeed.

actually it's not only in britain but mostly all chinese people who live in outside china like in other countries are wealthy.
no it's nothing to do with exchange rate but it's bcoz their inherits the family save money for their children, grand children, and so on. they have much money bcoz they work so hard for their children.
