Assuming you clean the cage at least weekly, and spot clean on a daily basis, none of the following animals should smell that much.

I have guinea pigs myself, which I keep on aspen shavings, spot clean the cage daily or every other day, and clean the cage once a week, or more if needed. I also will occasionally bathe the guinea pigs if they need it.

That said, I personally would recommend a rat. Hamsters (at least the hamsters I have met) have a tendency to nip, and rats tend to be more social than mice. I've had three rats myself, and they are almost dog like in personality.

However, before you set yourself on getting one of these three, talk with your mom about the choices you are considering. She may not like or want one of any of the three in her house.

If you are just looking at rodents, and given you can find them, a chinchilla or spiney mice smell the least, followed closely by rats, then hamsters, and fancy mice last.

Fancy mice have this "whang" to them that I can not stand. I would clean their cage EVERY day, and still notice it.

I have had up to 12 rats at a time, and I really only notice their smell when one of my females started spraying her urine on the wall. I think she got real territorial when one of the others girls had babies and she could smell them. (?)

I currently have three spiney mice. I spot clean the cage every few days and only give it a good cleaning twice a month. They are desert creatures and don't make a lot of urine. They are not near as friendly as my rats, but they're darned cute. Being ultra exotic, they are a rare find, and the seller must have a permit.

I also have a chinchilla. I clean him once a week, and he has absolutely NO smell. A whole lot of dusty but no smell. They really only take to one owner, and they're not cuddly by any means.

I have two male rats and BOY do you have to clean their cage offten!!! Also they leave little marks of appreciation on you, which is pee. But despite their ...umm.. peeing I love them to bits and they are the most adorable little raitties in the world! Female rats are the opposite, they dont smell much at all.

The saying goes, rats are like small dogs, which I very much agree with.
