Moss Side is not as dangerous as people think. I bought a house in Langworthy, Salford in 1988 and four years ago I was forced to sell it to the only possible buyer, Salford City Council, for much less than I owed the bank. It was a nightmare of crime, arson and vandalism that finished up with acres of empty property. Most of this was done by kids of 6 to 16. The police would not protect us (until it was too late, and the area had been in all the tabloids and three times on Paxman's Newsnight).

If I'd bought my house in Moss Side instead I would still have had one. There is a certain amount of serious crime, to do with hard drugs and guns, but if you're not involved with this you won't get bothered.

I was a bus driver in various areas in Manchester and Salford, and I can vouch with certainty that all the drivers would rather work in Moss Side than in some areas such as Salford, Monton and Higher Blackley. Although I once picked up a guy who was frantically running from two attackers in Moss Side, and once when I pulled up sharply at the lights by the Kestrel brewery a guy dropped a gun he had under his coat (it slid to the front of the bus and I just let him pick it up again) I was never attacked by any passenger in Moss Side.

I am white but I can tell you that it was when I saw groups of white youths ahead waiting at a stop, schoolkids even, that my heart started pounding, never the case with blacks (Moss Side) or Asians (Cheetham Hill, Longsight).

moss side is a rough area of manchester- you may have heard of the shootings there recently -a 15 yr old; Jesse James was shot dead. Not a v nice area. If you want to visit manchester best going to the city centre anyway that's where all the decent clubs etc are and the hotels are not v expensive.

There are some quite nice places in the Manchester area but Moss Side is not one of them.

If you have an armed bodyguard you should be O K but after dark just keep well clear.

Like any city, Manchester has it's rough areas of which this is one of them. It became well known during the 80s and 90s due to a series of race riots.

It is about 2 miles south of the city centre but as with most of these dodgy areas you are unlikely to 'just wander' into them. You get warning as the main affluence of the centre runs out and the shops stop.

Moss Side, not far from M/cr city centre, is gangland. Lots of drugs, gun crime and gang warfare. A no-go area even for the police at times. If you get a flat tyre, don't stop to change it - drive on the rims. Not dissimilar from your Peckham - it's just the accents that are different!

Not "UNSAFE", - but, I would NOT advise you to go INTO that area, if your wearing ANYTHING, showing "AFFILIATIONS", with MANCHESTER UNITED!

Moss Side, was where the "MAINE ROAD" stadium stood, for MANY YEARS, - it's "STAUNCHLY" a "BLUE" area, - as is the MAJORITY of the ENTIRE City!

The "UNITED" rabble, are confined to the OUTSKIRTS of the City Centre! There are VERY FEW "RED" fans, actually, IN Manchester, itself!
