The tendency can be inherited but the cleft palate itself is a result of vitamin deficiency. Folic Acid (B vitamins) has been mentioned. I would discuss the matter with the doctor and nutritionist now. You have no time to lose as the basic structure of the child is determined in the first three months.

It is possible. Any genetic flaws/health flaws that are apparent or have been seen in your parent's family's line CAN be passed to you or your child. Not all of them will show up at birth, or even within the first years of life.

When I was an OB nurse a little girl was born with a profound clef lip and I was so touched by her parents......they gushed over her. She indeed was a princess and so beautiful.
A surgery took care of it.

i had a anomaly scan at 20 weeks which checked for things like that I'm sure they'll check your baby as it is in the family but I'm sure it will be OK
