Professionally speaking, if you are in the creative industries, imho, Macs are the weapon of choice. Font handling, graphics all handled beautifully. (this is why I find the mac ads bizarre. in my eyes, PC's are the domestic game players whereas macs are pro design tools.)
As for the limitations, thats a myth. Macs are actually as capable as PC's in most things, better than PC's on the rest (connectivity for example) They even run on the same chips now so in only a few years there will be no difference apart from OS. Which brings me on to the operating system. Up to OS 9 (mac) windows lead the way. Then Mac released OSX and windows has been chasing ever since. Vista is the latest in a line of cheap OSX knock offs. 10.5 comes out soon, bristling with new bits that vista just can't match.

There are many reasons.
A lot of it is that they think they look good (kind of like Fischer Price products in fact). Some of it also has to do with the OS they come with being a lot better than windows underneath the hood and lacking the virus and worm problems that plague the Microsoft junk.
They also have a native version of Microsoft office so most people who need office can still get their work done on a Mac.
A lot of it them are people who want to get away from Microsoft junk but can't stand the idea of downloading Linux for free and putting it on an existing computer.
Some people claim that graphics is a reason to use Macs although that has mainly been a claim because that was all people did on macs which compared to PCs have typically been crap at graphics (though with Apple switching to Intel chips there is no longer a real performance difference between Mac OS and Windows graphics apps (before the change windows versions tended to be a lot faster)).

Its a fashion thing, Crapple are very good at convincing fashion victims to part with large amounts of cash becuase they convince them that they are 'smart' for buying their over-priced junk. They play on peoples vanity - 'oooh i'll buy this because its dead cool and the cool people have one' what a load of old crap. Theres nothing even remotely special about the crapintosh - never has been, never will be, you can do everything (and more) on a pc that you can with a crapintosh, but with a pc you'll have bundles of cash left over.

We have a mac at home and all the family love it. It can do everything we need, it looks good and you don't get those pesky virus problems.

unless you work in the publishing industry (where for legacy reasons there was a pretty tight integration between Apple and printing hardware) then is little reason for Macs, unless....
you want to show you are a fashion victim
you want to show your are following sheep like various style gurus
you want to show how much cash you've got (macs cost more, software costs more)
you want to pretend that you are hip and trendy
you want old outdated software
you couldn't give a stuff about economics, cost effectiveness
you want to integrate you IPox MP3 player using ITunes (and further lock your future buying choices into a closed in propriatory hardware and software platform.
