Deborah it is all relative. First you have reflect on what position you are applying for. Does it come with a great deal of responsibility if so one of the answers given here about delegating responsibility maybe pertinent. However, I would be more inclined to think back on a situation that you have dealt with effectively and how you coped under pressure by taking the common sense approach.

People want to see that you can use your initiative and deal with a difficult situation so that the outcome is resolved in satisfactory manner. There not looking for a super human being.

I do not know what you have done in the past. Have you had responsibility for health and safety issues and policies within your present organisation if so show how you dealt with a fire drill and as the fire warden for your department you followed procedures ensuring the safe evacuation of staff and personnel with that department.

I do hope this helps. Sorry I cannot put words into your mouth but you need to use your own initiative on this one and get a feel for what they are looking for.

They will be looking for someone who has integrity, can shoulder responsibility and can stay calm under pressure.

Good luck.

Oh now I know you work in retail just say that some one was so rude to you that you grabbed them by the short and curleys and marc hed them out of the door. This is sure to raise a laugh, but I doubt you will get the job.

A difficult situation that i have delt with involved a customer who was shoplifting. A member of my staff had approached me to tell me that they thought a customer was suspicious. I then alerted my staff to observe the customer discreetly, I then seen the lady put (whatever sector you worked in) into a pram. I immediately alerted the security guard and telephoned the police. while we were waiting on the police to come, the lady was quite difficult but i remained calm and in control at all times, my supervisor then awarded my employee of the month and the monthly meeting for the successful manner in which I handled the situation

well it kinda depends what job you are going for....i used to work in retail, and that was one question that i always hated getting....all i used to say was that i was having a very busy morning, getting new stock out, taking old stock off, or some such and found myself dealing with a very difficult customer, who started getting rude and offensive, and after i tried dealing with them myself staycalm all the while i asked the customer to either make a complaint to our head office or talk to the manage.....that kinda thing usually did the trick...little white lies on application forms never hurt so long as you can back them up ;) good luck

answer:

when it comes to difficult situations i immediatly take a leadership role. i believe its the best way to handle any situation. delegate controls, direct, assure others that the situation isn't as difficult as it may seem. keeping a calm but interrigating like attitude will keep everyone else calm and they will listen to you and follow you direction.

As this is work-related, I would give an example of how you have coped under pressure in the workplace, meeting deadlines, balancing your workload etc.

how about a complaint from a customer you dealt with in a previous job? and resolved of course!

an argument between colleagues you helped to sort out?

it would help if you gave details of this job and your previous job!

Try something like: "Answering this question. I wasnt sure how to answer it, so I researched previous answers by asking an online chatroom and came up with this answer"
