You can check for the following features which are usually present in safer online shops:
1) The address of safer online shopping sites would begin with " https:// ", instead of the usual " http:// " .
2) In Internet Explorer 6 or earlier versions, you will see in most online shopping sites a lock symbol at the bottom right corner of the browser window.
In Internet Explorer 7, this lock symbol is found to the right of the address bar.
3) In some online shopping sites, a soft keyboard may be offered for you to type in your user name and password. This is to prevent keyloggers from logging any typed passwords.
However, you have to note that these features are not foolproof and can be forged by very professional hackers, but typically most online shopping sites that have the above features are more credible and safer to use.
Another point to judge whether a website is safe to shop online is whether they contain grammatical or spelling mistakes.
As for obtaining a receipt for proof of purchase, this is usually in the form of an email for online shopping. If you are shopping from local shopping sites, a telephone number may be listed for you to call for any assistance which you might need.

If you apply a little common sense and check for the security it's safe as houses.
Before you give any card info make sure the address of the website begins with https the s at the end means you are on a secure server. Try to deal only with companies you know. Any webshop will issue a reciept of payment by email automatically. Your credit card will also give you protection against no-delivery just as it would if you had ordered an item on the 'phone.

Yes it is safe, I have given my credit details to numerous websites, and each have been fine, when a shady website tries to make transactions from my card my bank ring me to confirm that it is me really making that purchase, weird enough the only site that has triggered my bank to call me to confirm is amazon.com which is very trustworthy,
And also most online purchases will give you a reciept, also good banks can reverse a payment if the item bought is not recieved and/or turns out to be a fraudulent website.

hey there!!
if u use Firefox, it easy to know if its safe to buy from that site or not, go to the page where u hv to type ur credit card no.. and all those stuff..
look for a green lock type icon (shows that the site is encrypted for security)on the right side of the address bar, if present, click on it to check the security certificate, if it says high lvl of encryption, u can buy from that site without any worry...
Good luck
