Oh dear hope you have a back up disk, my hubby had a kazza Hacking Worm on his it deleted his windows, his system restore, his norton antivirus and was going through his system deleting every thing, i had to reboot it and reload it from a back up disk then i had to run a virus scan right away to delete any traces left of the thing, all other things i tried just would not work, if you have no back up disk id say call a pro before it gats out of hand.

Best thing to do is -
1. Save all the files you want to keep onto a storage device
2. Insert your windows xp recovery CD and then turn off the PC.
3. Turn the PC on again and let Windows wipe ytour hard disk and install itself again.
Once this is done, reinstall your internet software, downlaod some antivirus such as Avast! or AVG and do a thorough scan. Then reinstall your files from the storage device. Your PC will run like new.
Remember, this is the nuclear option so you may want to consider milder alternatives such as a system restore, but this doesn't always work by any means. However, a reinstall is guaranteed to work because you are, to all intents and purposes, starting all over again. Unless there is a hardware problem.

Well, I can't tell you much by your description. Next time, write down the error messages. They are very important, as they tell you what exactly went wrong and then we (the helpers) wont have to guess what went wrong.
Here are my suggestions:
I'm guessing you got a virus.
First, boot in safe mode and run an antivirus scan or two. Scan for spyware and adware while you are at it. If you need an antivirus get AVG Free. Spybot Search & Destroy is a good spyware cleaner.
Second (if first doesn't help), do a repair install of windows. This shouldn't get rid of any of your documents or programs (hopefully). It should fix any problems with windows though.
Finally, if nothing else works, reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows.

hey johanna,
first of all check whether you have a backup of the operating system, if you do that would be great, when u start the pc it will go through a list of error checks because your pc was incorrectly shut down, however after all those errors is the pc starting and working or are you getting any errors, if not everything is fine.

I as quickly as prepare a working laptop or pc utilising extra factors. i could no longer understand why it would activate and close off after some seconds, purely like your pc. i got here across a foul modem card, once I bumped off it each little thing booted up wonderful. maybe your video card is the wrongdoer.

Hit start then shut down then restart. If that don't do it try it again. If that don't do it take your hard drive to a pro.
