My daughter was refused to doing her own options at school, she wants to do hair and beauty they told us it was a waste of her potential saying she is too intelligent I found this violated her rights to pick what she wants to do in life, and so after getting no joy from school we went to local press the sheffield star. Due to this the yorkshire post got in contact with us then calendar news wanted to air it on our local T.V programmes, we did all this purely to help her because kids do not ask to be born we wanted our children and will back their choices in life all the way if they don't harm themselves obviously. Now school has taken notice and wish to see me, how would you deal with this?
I want my daughter to do something she truly desires and not be forced to take subjects she has no interest in otherwise then her grades will start to drop and she will not want to go to lessons she has no desire to do, any answers are much appreciated got to go to meeting at 12.15 thanks Clare.

Sorry but this is genuine if you live in sheffield you would know and I am not living in a fantasy world raymond I am trying to help my child do as she sees fit for herself just because she is intelligent does not give anyone the right to stop her doing something that seems less meaningful to them, are the school claiming hairdressers are stupid ?

Thank you Deborah at least you haven't slated me or think i'm lying I truly did not want to go to press but every time I called the school to make appointments to see someone I got brushed off I believe they were hoping we would just accept their decision.

Also personally as a mother I do not have the right to make my child do something she does not want to do just because we have kids doesn't mean we can mould them into something that pleases us they have the right to be their own personalities and individual please I am not a dictator I am a mother that loves her child and respects her wishes by the way sorry she is almost 15 :)

I would certainly listen to the school's advice, but, your daughter (and you) has a right to choose what she wants to do with her life. You didn't say how old she was, but I'm guessing senior level in high school or UK equivalent?

However I'm not sure I agree with your decision to go to the press, I think I would've contacted the school board or something like that first.

Regardless, what's done is done. I'm assuming the school wants to either change their decision and let your daughter take what she wants to, OR, they're going to try and talk you into changing your mind and keeping quiet about it.

I'd recommend in the meeting that you stick to your point that you want to support your daughter and she has a right to choose her interests. Try and ignore the whole media thing. If the school is willing to concede, then I'd drop it, don't embarrass them further. (What's wrong with hair and beauty, anyway, she can always get a job in these fields, anywhere she goes!)

Actually, as a mother myself, I'm shocked that you, as a mother, would sacrifice your daughter's future because you think her "rights" are being violated??? If the school is adamant that your daughter is too intelligent to take hair/beauty courses, then why would you protest and go to the newspaper and show them how inane you truly are. Most parents in the world would be thrilled to know that their children are intelligent and would like them to move forward and upward.....Is it possible that you are not the mother but you are the student who is being encouraged by the school but you want the easy way out???
