A lot of people use it to replace the expression 'Oh my God'.

The reason why some people may find it offensive is that they think this expression is blasphemous against God.

Most see it as "Oh, my God!" (which, when spoken, should be sounded like so: "omigosh"). But there are interpretive variations, as in "Oh my goodness!" or "Oh my gosh!" or "Oh my great-Aunt-Nellie!" OK, the last one was a fluke, but you get the idea. In the end, it all comes down to your perception of it, and what it means to YOU. Or her. Tell your mother it stands for Omigosh, and it's not blasphemy anymore!

PS Supposedly, "gosh" is a corruption of the word "God." Hope that doesn't burst your bubble.

Cheers!

I use it as Oh my God! But oh my gosh sounds right too. And I never thought it as rude. Why should it be rude?

It is a slang term for I don't believe it, and at the same time a colloquial term identifying God as the supreme being that can control everything including those things we cannot believe with our own eyes.
