Hi Bea, as a web page design student I find the following sites to be useful.

As will as using html, it’s a good idea to use css (Cascading Style Sheets) for format. There is a good tutorial at http://www.w3schools.com/css

First, check this website:

It has lots of free blog resources (as the title of the web page implies...) The question is, do you already have a blog and want to make it look prettier or are you trying to find blog creation software?

These sites have a set of very nice templates that you can use and they're free to download. They include pre-made HTML code that will provide the look you've chosen:

If you're not satisfied and need more variety, just google 'free blog templates' and see what comes up. Be cautious, though, that some of the sites that claim to have 'free' downloads ask you in fact to pay for a full template.
