Who Knows? One thing for sure though, if you eat cheese before going to bed you're going to have bad dreams. Don't eat cheese!

Don't take any notice of all the negative comments on here, her problem is real and should be addressed as such. I don't know whether you believe in the spirit world, but immediately I read this I knew that it is real, she does have someone standing next to the bed. People in spirit, because they cannot always contact the people who have not developed their psychic abilities, come to them in dreams. This is what is happening to your girlfriend. Tell her not to be afraid as the spirit person does not wish her any harm. I feel it is her guardian angel watching over her as she sleeps. I am a spiritualist medium and I shall probably get the thumbs down for this answer - I usually do! But I am just trying to help. x

We all have had nightmares at various parts in our lives. They are quite normal. But what is exactly a nightmare and why do we have them?
Nightmares are a subcategory of dreams. The distinction of a nightmare is its frightening and/or emotional content. You tend to wake up in fear in the midst of a nightmare. Because of its frightening nature, you tend to remember your nightmares and the vivid details. They have a bigger impact upon your waking mind and its images stay with you throughout the day. One reason for nightmares may be a way of our unconscious to get our attention about a situation or problem that you have been avoiding. It is time to take notice and confront a problem or situation. Nightmares serve an important purpose in showing you what is troubling you from within you deeper levels. Discussing, analyzing, and understanding your nightmares can lead to a solution for some problem, internal conflict or personal difficulty/

This would depend on how superstitous and/or open to suggestion you are. If you are pro-Freud, every dream is a "fullfillment of a wish." Of course, there isn't always meaning in everything. There is simply cause and effect, if you are looking for deeply philosophical answers, you will have to make one up yourself. Sadly, many take advantage of this curiosity and make a living milking the gullible interpreting dreams. Your question ultimately is equivalent to the: "what is the meaning of life," since it is up to you.

My dream book says that the intruder in the dream stands for Social pressure or criticism. The bed stands for the feeling of wanting to retreat to a privite place that is safe. You can with draw from the world to your bed, but with worries the bed can become a place of unrest, because of insomnia, and physical pain. You have heard the phrase, you made your bed now lye in it.

If she "feels" the person standing there, or even sense or sees the person, it's probably more of a hallucination than a dream.
If she's on any medication, she should get that checked out. It could be a side effect.
Otherwise, she needs you to "protect" her. Reassure her that you'd save her. Her dream could be her mind wondering if you'll be there for her when she needs you to save her.

something maybe has happened to her in her past that she might ot even have exact knowledge of, or even remember clearly. i have suffered from a short period of post traumatic stress disorder when an unknown male enetered my apartment by breaking the lock on my door. i awoke while he was atop of me, naked, and trying to force himself on me. since then i havent been the same, i constantly look over my shoulder, lock as many doors as i can so while i am sleeping i am not so scared to be disturbed this way again. i honestly dont think about thinking about it, its just now set in my mind and thoughts to "be afraid". maybe she has just watched too many scary movies......who knows? good luck with the dreams. P.S. jus hold her tight and kiss her forehead when she wakes up startled.

It's an anxiety dream, something in her life is worrying her or making her anxious. Even if it just in her subconcious somewhere.
It could also mean that she feels inferior in some way or paranoid in some part of her life.

erm there is someone she is worried will get in on your relationship or try to ruin it...
the fact they are standing by bed - this is personal space for a couple.
The fact they are looking at her - the person is connected to her in some way, not you. She knows who this person is, even if its sub consciously at the minute, the dream isnt allowing her to see them because her ego is protecting itself from the truth or reality!
