I think you can more than likely take it to heart. That statement is tantamount to a company mission statement, and most businesses take those sort of things very seriously. That is not to say that all of their employees are going to be members of PFLAG, however. It is just a sort of official policy to ensure that their employees are not discriminated against. Take the job, I doubt you will be sorry.

Gay Lord is right. If a company lies about their discrimination policy, they leave themselves open to all manner of lawsuits. I would take it to heart, but still ... their idea of what constitutes "discrimination" may be totally different from everyone else's. Does the material specify how they qualify that? If it doesn't, you might want to ask someone in the upper echelon, and I would suggest getting it on paper. In the end, it's all probably paranoia on my part, but better safe than sorry, I think.

Ask for the company's employee handbook. If it is a union job, ask for a copy of the collective bargaining agreement. Look into thier policies. They may have to fill a 'quota' as to how many and what kind of minorities they need to hire, if this is the case, the work environment may not be the best for someone who is gay/lesbian. Just look into thier benefits package etc before you decide.

Take the job and out yourself later. The interviewer could still be anti-gay and you could lose the job before you have it. It's also sometimes harder to make a case against the company in court. Once you're in though, take a quick look around and if you don't see some religious fanatics around you should be safe.

In the U.S. companies must be serious about their equal opportunity policies or they will have serious legal problems. Each country is different. Check you local laws concerning fair hiring practices. If good laws are in place, you shouldn't have too much to worry about, other than some bigoted co-workers...at times.

I actually work for a company that does provide insurance for domestic partners....and my partner has insurance with me. I fortunately work in a very diverse office of my company as well. with less than 30 people there are 5 of us who are gay...as well as very racially mixed black, white, Asian and Latino.
