Plan what you want to say. Make sure you introduce your essay with a few paragraphs stating what it's about and what your opinion is of the subject, don't 'stand on the fence'. Then make sure the body of the essay relates to the introduction, then conclude it. Don't say anything new in the conclusion. Finally, make sure your conclusion agrees with your introduction.

And avoid saying 'I think that...', instead say 'In concurrence with the thoughts of (someone), ....' write in the third party, not 'I'. Make sure you reference any quotes by putting their name, and date of quote underneath it in brackets then on a seperate page list the source of the quote.

I wouldn't worry too much about the technicality of this essay. After all, you are applying for a course to learn that, I doubt they expect you to be profficient already. I think they'll want to see that you have bothered to research your subject and that your spelling and grammer are OK.

Just remember the simple rule from school: beginning, middle, and end. Always name your references and add a bibliography. If you're worried about waffling, apply to do philosophy. It never did me any harm! (JK). Essay methods do actually vary from subject to subject, so maybe you could add what you are planning to study so people can give you more specific advice.
