You train to be a specific doc during your intern and residency. Lasts 3 years and up. May have to do a fellowship too.

Usually four years. Then there's another year or two for a specialty, an internship, then a residency. If you don't take any time off, you'll be in your early 30's before you can have a practice of your own. It's a long haul.
