At one point in time people didn't live to be much past 30 and I sure cats didn't live as long either. It's a "healthy" lifestyle and environment that keeps humans alive for as long as we are. Advances in medicine and treatments for problems keeps us alive as well. Advances in vet medicine and treatments keeps our pets alive too. Not long ago if you had said, "I have a 15 year old cat." People would have looked at you and said, "Wow, can I have what your feeding your cat for my cat?"
Ah, evolution of the body and technology. What a wonderful thing. Or is it?

It's just the way they're built. A cat usually never lives to be 20. Horses can live to 30. Parrots can live 60-70 years and the giant tortoise can live up to 300 years.

Well...the concept of animal years is just stupid. They came up with that concept to compare animals to humans. Fact of the matter is BEFORE medical advancements people lived an average of 20-30 years.
In a nut-shell...this is what happened: There have been HUGE medical advancements for humans extending their lives considerably, HOWEVER, there have not been huge medical advancements for animals.

well it depends what animals you are talking about!
some turtles or tortoises can't remember which can live over 100 years so it is just in their genetic make up also if you think back we only used to live until about 40 or 50 so i think it is because firstly better medical advances and scientific research and we have better food and water and shelter in the western world but some countries still have extremely low life expectancies because of their poor hygiene and poor food and water sources so it all depends on many factors!

Interesting question. Some animals live longer than humans though, like those Galopagos Island tortoises and I think elephants (if they don't get shot). I always wondered myself about how long giant squids had lived or if you gave certain bugs (like roaches) or reptiles (like snakes) optimal living conditions, how long they would last.

My nan's cat lived to about 20 something....
And some birds can live up to 50 years..so it depends on the animal.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that they work too hard in their life time. It might also be that they exceed their heart beat limits faster then humans do.

i donno. maybe because of the structure of their bodies or something. type of food they have to eat maybe it doesn't generate certain things for long life or something. 1 or 2 animals live 4 tons longer than we do though. elephants can live longer than us but we r next. donno about cats and stuff though. mayb because they are not like pure they are domestic so maybe not...i donno dont ask me
