In the UK, only cars first registered before 1st March 2001 are taxed according to engine size, in two bands, with a maximum tax of £180 for 12 months.
Cars registered on or after 1st March 2001 are taxed according to CO2 emissions as measured on the EC Combined Cycle fuel consumption test.
For cars registered from 1st March 2001 to 22nd March 2006 inclusive, there are six bands A to F, with a maximum tax of £205 for 12 months.
For cars registered on or after 23rd March 2006 there is an additional band, Band G, for cars with CO2 emissions greater than 225g/km, for which the current rate is £300 for 12 months. Cars of less than 225g/km are rated the same as those registered from 1st March 2001.
