The salary of a Mauritian is quite small compared to standards of North America or Europe. The cost of living is also quite low. Rent, groceries, local restaurants, bus and taxi fares are all fairly low. (What many foreigners see is only the high cost of resort hotels, hotel restaurants and sports) Residents do not hang out in resort hotels or restaurants. A Mauritian worker (man in manual labor) would only make about $350 a month. A factory worker (often women and youth) can make as little as $100 a month. The average Mauritian family can live on that sort of salary.
Many Mauritian families do not have their own vehicle as the cost of buying and running a vehicle is one of the more expensive things in the country. This is because of the high tax attached to the importation of vehicles, and also the cost of gas, insurance, etc. to run the car. Mauritians who own a car often buy a used one unless they are privileged to be in a higher salary bracket. Obviously, there are well-to-do Mauritians which live better than the average family.
If you are North American or European, you are probably going to do ok for about $2000-$2500 a month. Depends if you are getting benefits as well. If you are getting housing or vehicle or both, you can do it cheaper than that.
ps. Our last apartment was really nice, 3 bedroom, fully furnished (beautifully decorated) at $500 a month.

if u are earning a decent salary in dollars or pound sterlings, then u don't have to worry. with Rs 30 000, u can live a pretty comfortable life, if it's just for 2 people. but it also depends now, if u're renting a house or buying a house.

2 shy is right, his analysis is quite sharp... being a Mauritian, I can say that the word comfortably is too subjective, what you can consider as comfortable can be much more than comfortable for a Mauritian... I think you have to evaluate the situation from here! Good Luck!!!
