This AWD system is probably the best in the world. That's why GM had part of FUJI and that's why Toyota has part of them now. They are very reliable and I have been driving them for over 20 years. I used to work as a service adviser at Subaru dealers for many years before my accident and I have only seen one AWD system die and that is because tha lady that owned the car did not maintain it properly. Go for it you'll love the car. They are very reliable, dependable and safe cars plus they maintain their value.

The Impreza is indeed a very reliable car, on par with the best compact cars. It also has an extremely solid and crashworthy structure. Since the AWD system was designed from the onset to be AWD and not adapted from a 2WD chassis, it's efficient, bulletproof, and works transparently. The only drawback is that the Impreza's fuel consumption is closer to mid-size car territory.

They are very reliable vehicles. But if you take the most reliable of vehicles and do not treat it properly, there will be problems. Always follow the suggested maitenance and you should be fine. One problem with any AWD car is idiot kids who always want to jump their car off the line, which can cause expensive repairs for the AWD system later on. Normal driving should not cause any malfunction, though.

generally reliable, but late 90s to early 2000s are prone to head gasket failure (Subaru recommends a Subaru coolant "conditioner" now), and early to mid 2000s may have piston slap due to the motor's short piston skirts. Look up "Subaru head gasket" and "Subaru piston slap" for more info. The colder it is, the louder the noise. The noise is lessened when the car is at operating temperature.
I can't say much about the newer Imprezas. But I know the engine was since upgraded, and hopefully Subaru realized that Subaru owners do not like to listen to a noisy engine with piston slap. Subaru has supposedly claimed that the piston slap is not detrimental to engine wear or fuel economy.

I've got a 2006 Impreza WRX limited and you can't beat the all-wheel drive. I live in the pacific nw and we get our fair share of snow here and it works great. Plus the five star safety ratings nice on my insurance premiums.
