A newborn baby CAN drown in water. They dont have the muscles to keep themselves afloat and as soon as they take that first breath they need to keep breathing to live. You can take your baby to Learn to Swim classes at any time. Actually you should wait until they can at least hold their own head up. It's best to start early so your baby feels more natural in the water and does not develop a fear of water. My parents have a pool and I take my baby in there all the time (in the summer). The first time she was less than a year old and she LOVED it! She kicked her legs and arms and splashed like crazy. I think shes going to be a natural swimmer. She loves being in the water even if its for a bath!

The best age is soon after birth. They have been in aquous medium before birth and they do not feel new. They can really swim naturally.
