How would I type a word such as "melee" with the propper accent marks? Keep in mind I am not asking what the accent marks for the word "melee" are I would just like to know what key strokes I need to use.

There are some keyboard shot cuts. Vowels with acute accents - é - are made by pressing the 'alt' key at the same time as you press the letter key. € is made by pressing alt and 4. There may be others, I don't know. No doubt a French keyboard is configured differently in order to easily produce grave and circumflex accents without the need to use the character map as explained in another answer - so meleé!

I have also wondered this. I cannot believe a high-speed typist working in French would use a technique involving a mouse, menu selections or ALT+numbers on the numeric keypad.

I have asked a similar question myself regarding mathematical symbols. It is clear that a few people have a facility for typing them in Yahoo Answers, but the majority of regular answerers do not, and none of the techniques I have seen described could be considered good enough for use as standard. When I select the symbols from a menu, they come out as squares in the Answer box.
