There is this person at work who I was friendly with before but then his attitude changed and he became very arrogant and self-centered, and anytime he is around me he would find some way to belittle me or insult me in front of others. Even with this behavior this person still insists on "hanging out" with me outside of work, even though I can't stand this person. I don't want to be rude and completely ignore him, but what he does is just irritating and I don't think he realizes it.

What works for me is being nice to them, being accomodating as needed. I MEAN AS NEEDED. Meaning dont open up to them, answer in short words except when necessary. Keep your distance. Discuss with mutual friends your feelings; but keep them brief and keep them scratching the surface of negative as there is a 70/30 chance it will get back to this person. If the person becomes to overbearing then you need to tell them you are very busy, have alot going on and need to spend time with the friends you have as they need you right now!

Hi sounds like tis person is a real jerk i dont blame you for not wanting to have anything to do with him he probably dosnt have any other friends because of his behavour, just tell him straight out you dont like his attitude and you dont want to assosiate with him because he is not a nice person , sometimes you have to be rude because people like him dont take the hint to well , good luck

My suggestion is make him realise it or you could play his game.(But don't let it get out of hand. Just laugh about it afterwards) A few people have done this before with mood swings and all to me and I've just had funny comebacks to take them by surprise to make them feel a fool and normally after we laugh about it and get along fine.

You should just confromt him and tell him "you and I are quits!" and remember to say it very firmly.Trust me.I tried it out before and it really worked!I tried it when I dumped my boyfriend. Since then,he stopped pestering me.

Pick your nose and wipe it on him.

That should send a clear message.
