I am from Minnesota and it was always around the Month of July when we were able to spot our first Lighting bug or we called them Fire Flies. We found out very young that if you squished them when removing them from the net, the chemical in their bodies would make your hands glow. So you had to be very gentle when you went to put them in the jar.

Lucky you having bugs that light up and tell u were they r. We just have plain old bugs here to my knowledge sorry can't help.

you will see them when they start to visit your area---the best time to spot them is just before it gets dark, they come out in search of mates. They are very slow fliers and easy to catch. Once it is dark they go away as the light makes them easy food for bats.
