What gun is Vash's gun based off of?

the closest gun to his gun is the smith&wesson 45 revolver. but the creator took liberties with his drawing. (one of the days my brother and me are going to build a gun like vash's --we have a lathe, and we know how to use it)

Which one, he has three. Hence the title "Trigun". If you're referring to his revolver, I'm sure the creator studied several. Having been around firearms most of my life, I noticed design elements from a few different models on Vash's gun. The one feature I thought was interesting, though, was that it fires its rounds from the chamber at the bottom of the cylinder. I've never seen any revolver do that. They fire from the chamber at the top. But I guess the creator felt he had to design it that way so he could put the heavy shroud above the barrel, intead of below. I suppose that would make the piece more stable upon firing.
Anyway, I digress. I think the creator of Trigun was inspired by several firearms, not just one, in addition to adding his own design elements.
