Well one way that I found quite useful was to go into the task manager "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" (For XP) and then see if something looks suspisious.
Also, if you couldn't find something, then open a text document and have the task manager open at the same time. Keep a letter key pressed for 5 seconds (this should result in a series of those letters). While doing so keep your eye on the task manager. If there is a program that is usning alot of the CPU resources while you do that, and looks suspicious, you'd probably want to terminate that process.

Else spyware removal software is always a good option. NOD32 is a very good Anti Virus and removes spy ware as well.

Best way to prevent any unwanted programs from infecting your pc is to very careful on what you download and to always run an updated antivirus and spyware programs stay off torrents and the like as its easy to hide malice software among the many rar files

1) If you have not already scanned your comp with spybot http://spywarekiller.hyperboards.com/index.php?action=view_topic&topic_id=4 do that now .Update it (Latest updates 21-3-2007) and then run it so it gets rid of all the spyware and trojans in safe mode

1b) Run AVG Anti-Spyware Free

2) Do an online virus scan to check and remove virus and spyware if you still have viruses on your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .

3) Get another anti virus program if your present anti virus program is not protecting you any longer
