And your example of this would be?
Gashfinger, tell me your not such a mental giant by making a statement like that! Do you not understand history, and you cannot describe the relationship we had with each one of those countries and for what reason. Are you that dumb?
Oh wait a minute, its your age, I bet that's it, does your mother know your on here? Better go to bed!
Oh, Ok, your a foreigner, so no you can't describe the relationship. OK, let me start, Iran, we supported the Shah, an Allie, one generally sells allies weapons, as much of a shock as that may be too you. Iraq, other than some old 113 personnel carriers, it escaped me what else we sold them, sure wasn't planes, so couldn't have been much. Afghanistan, we sold weapons to the Mujaheddin, not the afghan government, and what was that for? Hmmm lets see, to fight the Russians, oh that's right. And who else? Ohhh doesn't matter, we had our reasons :)
Your the Moron gashfinger, why don't you shut you f'ing trap about American politics and our foreign policy, and I won't talk about Blair and your countries lack of foreign policy! We have appreciated the help though..... Jack a-s-s

The short answer is that politics change.
Your question, however, has a tone of "simplicity" that most politics, especially on the "world" level just does not have. There are so many factors which go into decisions of arms sales, wars, alliances, etc., that to ask such a simple question is virtually impossible to answer.
Are you referring to the US supplying arms to Iraq while they attacked Afghanistan? If so, it's not so much that the US was allied with Iraq as it was that the Soviet Union was bogged down in Afghanistan, and we were more interested in what the Soviets were doing rather than the Iraqis. Once the Soviets pulled out, Iraq was left with the arms. We couldn't exactly take them all back, now could we? Nor could we control how they used the arms they had.
Then, as years and politics evolve, Iraq and Sadaam became a thorn in our side, along with the United Nation's side. We had stopped shipping arms to Iraq years ago, but "now" they had become a problem with how they were using their arms and how they were developing other arms. The decision was to attack Iraq and Sadaam and get rid of that problem.
Might situations change again in the future? OF COURSE... such is the nature of politics. Look at Japan/Germany and the US. We had a WORLD WAR against them, but now we are strongly allied with them, politically and economically.
Politics are rarely simple, like your question. However, it can be just as vague as your question.

Yes but if you look at the history, once we go to war our enemy has already switched to Russian made equipment, so your argument is faulty.
Besides you’re asking us to divine the future, sorry no country is capable of doing that.
I don't think anyone would have predicted during WWI we would be enemies with Japan 30 years later or that 90 years later we are closer to Japan than ever before.
No one predicted when the US took Cuba from Spain that it would become a communist nation and strongly opposed to the US a hundred years later.
But you are asking why didn't the US predict that we would be at war with former allies? Why didn't the UK predict the fall of the Russian imperial family and send troops to protect it, before the October revolution? After all the imperial families were related.
If we were able to predict the future then there would never be wars or conflicts and the world would be under US domination.
As for the UK being more "Civilized" how very Euro-centric of you. Considering the long and lovingly brutal history of your culture, I know that statement is skewed. I am also a frequent visitor of your country and I am familiar with many of its customs and traditions, and from first hand knowledge I know there is still a deep seeded love for violence in your people (which is one reason I love the UK so much).
If you would like us to begin predicting who will be our friend in 20 years please show us how that is done, because as far as my knowledge tells me, it is not possible.

If you want an honest answer? Lack of foresight. :-) Back when we were arming the Afghani rebels, it was to help fight the Soviet Union. Once the Soviet Union fell, and the Afghani Taliban supported Al Quaeda which attacked us, we went after the Taliban and--surprise! Some of them still have American weapons.
Times and administrations change. It's much easier to see the problem in hindsight... although I'd be just as glad if we worked harder to find at least some solutions that use less weaponry in general.

Because at the time America felt if was the right thing to do as Russia was trying to invade Afghanistan and Saddam was a self proclaimed socialist that at the time did not seem like a threat. America was scared of a communist Afganistan and a theocratic Iraq.

It is just economics. The sold weapons will have to be destroyed to create new demand.Even if that country will not purchase direct from USA,there are third parties, middle men ,agents etc in arms deals. So USA will be double benefitted.USA is biggest supplier of legitimate and also illegal source of supply for arms.American Arms manufacturing industry is a big powerful lobby, infact, they influence politics and create all wars/interventions.American Arms Manufacture keep the US economy in good health.

How else can we not appear to be Capitalist Running Dogs with no heart? Actually, the men who make weapons have been the scourge of the planet forever, but certainly in the last 150 years it has become worse. They don't care who they sell the weapons to at all. To them "there's a sucker born every minute, and If God did not want them sheared, He would not have made them sheep." These men have no heart, no soul, no conscience and no humanity. They live and work outside the laws of men, preying on us all as vultures

In the public domain of knowledge this has never happened.
Do you have any inside information?
EDIT
I know that they sold weapons to these countries but as far as I am aware they have never started a war because the country has used these weapons. The war with Iraq started because Iraq was trying to build Nukes as far as I know?
America did not sell these supposes Nukes to Iraq.
Maybe I am wrong, but this is my knowledge of it. I am just not aware of the US starting any wars with countries BECAUSE they are using the weapons they have sold them.
