Gary Payton, dude gets no respect but check this out......
9 time all-star
2 gold medals
Defensive Player of the Year 1996
All time he ranks-
22nd in points
6th in assists
3rd in steals
7th in minutes
9th in games
Only player with 20,000 pts, 5,000 rbs, 8,000 asts and 2,000 steals.
And he has a ring, something Stockton, Kidd and Nash will never have.

2 guys:
Pistol Pete Maravich - as someone has already noted he was known as a prolific scorer but he REVOLUTIONIZED the position and his handles/passing ability was second to none, no one has ever played a more exciting and entertaining game as Pistol Pete at that position. He was a player that left you jaw dropped and in awe after watching some of the things he could do.
John Stockton - no one gives him the credit he deserves b/c of the fact he never won an NBA championship, but i see a guy like Steve Nash who isnt nearly the PG that Stockton was has won 2 MVP's now. Steve Nash's best year in his career is what John Stockton averaged over his entire CAREER. He was twice the player that Nash was and if you look at there numbers and teams there is no comparison. Nash is a product of the style of game the Suns play (notice that he didnt do anything like that with the Mavericks) while Stockton EARNED his, he earned it by playing in a halfcourt offense that it made it more difficult for him to make great passes, but he still did it and alot more effectively than Nash does in his best game of all time. Nash is great but he isnt half the player Stockton was but everyone wants to say Nash is up for his 3rd MVP while Stockton doesnt have a single one, thats insanity and absurd and shows how dumb ppl can be.

1. Mark Jackson. Hands down. Number 2 assists all time and still can't get any love.
2. Kevin Johnson. For a while he was unstoppable
3. Mark Price. Jordan doesn't hit that shot over Craig Ehlo and the cavs would've won the 88-89 title. not the pistons.
4. Mugsy Bouges. Dude was 5' 3" played like 16 years. nuff said.
5. Jay Williams/Bobby Hurley- both awesome in college high draft picks, who knows just where their talent would've taken them

I think you have to include Maurice Cheeks of Philadelphia, Dennis Johnson of Boston, Gail Goodrich of the old Los Angeles Lakers, and Kenny Smith of Houston.

Gary Payton when he was on the Sonics.
Nick Van Exel when he was on the Lakers with Eddie Jones and terrible Vlade Divac. Remember when he pushed the ref on the scorer's table?

Doc Rivers..........Nope, "check that" as sports announcers say.
After reading the other answers I have to go with Mark Jackson.
