The story happens in the desert where a pilot who has crashed with his plane meets a little blond Prince who asks him if he can draw him a sheep. I think the setting just helps you to concentrate on the importance of what is shared by the adult and the child. It also is a metaphor of how the 'adult' world can be because they don't let their imagination lead their lives and yes I think it is essential it adds to the magical side of the book. Beautiful story.

I think it's set in Tunisia in World War II. This is part of the story's plot but not essential to the plot.

However, it could be important for thematic reasons. It's been a while since I read the book but I imagine that the Little Prince represents innocence and curious wonderment so the fact that the other character is a world-weary airman in the middle of a very adult war provides a nice thematic contrast.
