It's been so long since I told someone who had not known me as gay that I honestly have a hard time remembering. The unfortunate result is that only the most dramatic moments survive in memory.
My parents asked me how I thought I was going to live, thinking that gay guys could not get jobs and died as lonely, old men. A couple of people asked me how I could be involved in the Church if I was gay. But I don't remember most of them asking a single question. Either I was really good at explaining it, they were too shocked, or they just wanted to end the conversation ASAP.
Since people are asking when you knew, I think you probably are telling people who have known you for a while. They may be asking to ascertain how long you've been "struggling" with this knowledge on your own, without sharing it. I'm not certain I would jump to the conclusion about whether they're trying to see if you're just going through a phase. People are usually too self absorbed for that. They're more likely to question how long they've been missing out on the signs or why they weren't in your inner circle of friends who were the first to know.
Buena Suerte!

Since I have nothing to come out about, it wasn't the problem. I had to convince one girl I had no interest in being gay, though who knows why it interested her. She wanted to know if I would sleep with two men and other stuff. She couldn't believe that I was not gay and not interested. Never happened to me. Apparently, I 'just seemed like the type'. To this day, I have no idea what that means but it really doesn't matter.

For a while my mum thought i was gay, but eventually i told her i was actually ts when i was sixteen. My mum's reply was "I cant help you with that then!" Then her question was, "How long have you wanted to do this for?"
Four years on, i have started the transition, moved out (well kicked out) and starting liking men. She still doesnt like me. Isnt life wonderful? Not!

Was THAT what was bothering you? As if I has been in turmoil for nothing about being gay. That was my Grandma's way of trying to make me feel better. She was the most positive people in dealing with me being gay.

The first person I came out to was a dear friend of mine from college. He was actually the first person I came out to so I was a bit nervous, thinking I might lose his friendship and everything.
I told him during a lunch break off campus and I swear to you his first statement/question was "Thats cool dude, I kind of suspected all along. If you're not going to finish your salad can I have it?"
I thought it was a funny little story and sweet of him to try and help me relax by being a goof. = )

the best was when I told my 80 yr old grandfather....not only did I come out to him, but told him I was living with the woman I was in love with........He asked the following:
1. I prefer the term 'homosexual', is that ok?
2. do you have sex with this woman?
3. are you still gonna take me to Dennys for lunch when you come to visit?
and to think I was terrified as a teen to let him know the truth!!

"So its balls across the nose for you, huh Buck-o?"
In truth, the people you've chosen to "share" with prolly want to assess just how long you been looking at'em that certain way. You know that way.
Or some chick thinking she's just unattractive-or too fat, fer chrissakes! Or yer Granny who still thinks you're picky an' just holding out for the right girl! They'd want to know, I guess.

The most common question I got asked is "how do lesbians DO it?".
I just came back with "If you're a lesbian, you'll find out. If not, then you don't need to know."
I mean come on - I don't run around asking my straight friends how they have s3x!!

My first question to my son was "Did you not think I knew?" Then somewhere down the track I did ask what age did he know, his reply was around 12/13 ... I had a strong feeling well before then. Mothers know *smiles*
