often used as non-AEA, no pay?

Actor's Equity Association - The union for stage actors.

An AEA member is not usually able to take parts in low or no pay productions. When they join the union, they agree to work under a union contract, which has minimum pay requirements.

So these shows you are seeing notices for (seeking non-AEA actors) do not have money in the budget for equity (AEA) contracts.

Actors' Equity Association is what AEA stands for. It is a union for professional stage actors.

Non-AEA means that a theatre can use a non-AEA actor to cast because that actor isn't with the union and therefore the theatre company doesn't have to pay the actor.

American Equity Actors; usually actors get accepted into this society almost like a union and when they are offered roles they are to be paid by whatever these guidelines state. So if non AEA it means they probably dont want to hire AEA or will not pay you according to their guidelines.

Also, non AEA does not mean you don't get paid. It just means that it is not open to union members. They also don't pay on the same scale as union. It's a good place to start to get points toward your card though so give it a try if you're thinking about it.

That is absolutely the wrong answer! You need to delete your comment, spadezgurl22. AEA stands for ACTORS EQUITY ASSOCIATION, not American Equity Actors. And, it isn't "almost" a union, it IS a union. It is the labor union of professional actors and stage managers.

Don't just take my word for it, see AEA's website for proper information: http://www.actorsequity.org/.
