When ever I brake I hear a knocking sound. The faster I am going when I brake the faster the noise is and as I come to a rolling stop the noise is slower, and further apart. This noise only happens when I brake, no time else. I just put new drums on my car 2 weeks ago and the noise just started about a week ago. I pulled all 4 wheels off my car last night and looked at my brakes to see if I could tell what might be wrong. All the brakes, drums, etc. seem to be ok. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this knocking sound on my car? I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla. If theres any other info thats needed just let me know so I can provide it to you. Thanks!

Rotors could be warped, but generally you would feel pulsations in the pedal. Could be a loose caliper, or the backing plate. If you did the drum brakes yourself and didn't get the springs in exactly the same as they came off, that's a big problem. That's why I do 1 side at at time and leave the other as a reference.

Sounds like a loose brake pad or shoe though that's moving back and forth during braking. Check make sure the pads and shoes are bonded and riveted tightly to the plate backing.

tough question..good luck

I never known brakes to make a knocking sound. If it were in the rotors, you would feel it in the brake pedal also. This would mean that the rotors are warped and can be 'turned' back true at an auto machine shop. Are you sure that the noise is not coming from your engine?Like a rod knock.Does this noise get louder and faster as you accelerate? While at a stop, can you hear it?Rev the engine some at a stop and see if you still get that noise. If so, then it may be something with the engine. If any of this does not help you. Take to a repair garage and have a mechanic take a ride with you so he can maybe make a better diagnosis of this noise.Hard to hear it here in New York.LOL Anyway , Good Luck

Well like the above said check for warped rotor, ENGINE OIL, and see if someone left your mother in law in the truck.

Tough question on this one. When you check the back brakes, just check to make sure ALL THE PARTS are tight. See if the brake parts are secure.

your car might be making a knocking sound because you aren't using a high enough graded gasoline. when the gaoline you put in your car doesn't have a high enough octane rating for you car, it will spontaniously ignite on it's own, jut from the compression, instead of from the spark plug like it's supposed to. when this happens it makes a pinging noise, sounding like "knocking"

you might have to skip a few pages to get to the one about car trouble but it's all very interesting.

Inside of one of the front brake rotors is cracked.

ADDED:
You sure can crack a rotor. I've replaced a few over the years.

Your rotors or drums are warped. You need to replace them, but do it like a professional this time.
