Sounds like you should have an EKG done and your blood pressure checked; it's probably high. Tachycardia and HTN could be causing insomnia. A beta blocker like Atenolol taken at bedtime may help. You should consult with your doctor ASAP.

A sleep can become a disorder if 1) there is a cessation of the length of continuous sleep from an average of 6-8 hours to almost 3-4 hours 2) there's a known risk factor like having a caffeine, stress, external environment (like noise, baby cry) which you should identify. First , try to enhance your sleep pattern by listening to a good music, watching a TV or reading books. Second, try to consult with a doctor if your sleeping pattern becomes unnatural and affecting your life. He may prescribed you sleeping medications.

Absolutely, being exhausted can cause sleep issues. Being on Yahoo Answers will not help you get to sleep sooner. Find a good relaxation tape that guides you into a relaxed state by asking you to visualize certain things and consciously relax by isolating one body part at a time, until eventually every part is re l a x e d.
Google "Guided relaxation" for a selection of cds. It's nice to have a few different ones. They're great!
Try this:
(I think there's a free one here)

You sound stressed and in a cycle where you are in the same habit every night. Maybe a sleeping pill for a few nights would break the cycle. Talk to your doctor. You might also alter the time you go to sleep (later for a while, when you are exhausted).

Sometimes when I have trouble sleeping I keep my bedroom light on. It may take a while but somehow the light forces me to sleep because I end up getting so tired I have to close my eyes against the light.

Man, off the top of my head, that sounds like stress. Good luck, I'm having terrible troubles sleeping, too. Apparently, melatonin is supposed to work very well.
