Industry is a huge source of water pollution, it produces pollutants that are extremely harmful to people and the environment.

Many industrial facilities use freshwater to carry away waste from the plant and into rivers, lakes and oceans.
Pollutants from industrial sources include:
Asbestos – This pollutant is a serious health hazard and carcinogenic. Asbestos fibres can be inhaled and cause illnesses such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer, intestinal cancer and liver cancer.
Lead – This is a metallic element and can cause health and environmental problems. It is a non-biodegradable substance so is hard to clean up once the environment is contaminated. Lead is harmful to the health of many animals, including humans, as it can inhibit the action of bodily enzymes.
Mercury - This is a metallic element and can cause health and environmental problems. It is a non-biodegradable substance so is hard to clean up once the environment is contaminated. Mercury is also harmful to animal health as it can cause illness through mercury poisoning.
Nitrates – The increased use of fertilisers means that nitrates are more often being washed from the soil and into rivers and lakes. This can cause eutrophication, which can be very problematic to marine environments.
Phosphates - The increased use of fertilisers means that phosphates are more often being washed from the soil and into rivers and lakes. This can cause eutrophication, which can be very problematic to marine environments.
Sulphur – This is a non-metallic substance that is harmful for marine life.
Oils – Oil does not dissolve in water, instead it forms a thick layer on the water surface. This can stop marine plants receiving enough light for photosynthesis. It is also harmful for fish and marine birds.
Petrochemicals – This is formed from gas or petrol and can be toxic to marine life.

Causes are plenty. When producing you have waste. This waste can take many forms but are only related to 3 factors.

Production: wood-chips, nuclear waste, smoke. (This is the part recycling and environmental concern focuses on)

Cleaning/maintenance: Where does the stuff you use to clean your machines go? Think very aggressive cleaners washed away like normal sewage. The oil change from an industrial engine.

Replacement//obsoleteness: What happens to a factory when the industry is done with it? Ships on the shore of some 3rd world country.

STUPIDITY; NARROW-MINDEDNESS and LACK of ADVENTURE.
Industry really began in about 1810, nearly 200 yrs ago.
When it began most people were VERY poor - like NO FOOD poor; like of 13 children 11 would DIE poor; like ALL family live in ONE ROOM poor.
Most people worked on farms.
Then some of the cleverer poor discovered some-thing.
The NEW industry needed things such as copper for copper wiring in electrical things; iron to make steel to make the new machines.
The NEW industry and countries at war needed clothes for soldiers; clothes for factory workers etc..
These clever poor realised that they could become RICH fairly easily with LOTS of VERY HARD WORK.
SO they made things as cheaply as possible.
They were NARROW-MINDED and could only think about the thing they would sell to become RICH - like have food in one's stomach EVERY day RICH.
When they made things there were produced several rubbish things for example - when they washed metals to sell they often used acids - these acids, though dangerous, would be thrown away after use.
They did not know what else to do.
If they had travelled, they would have found the acid could be used in other industry. BUT these people called 'the NOVEAU riche' stayed where they were making money; they encouraged their children to take over. Though they were stupid and narrow-minded, BUT they loved their children and WANTED their children to also have enough food to eat EVERY day. The children's children, did the same thing so kept on throwing things away.
Their factories did some of the following - I know because in 1960 when I was a teen I saw this happening.
- things like acids, poisonous chemicals, coloured chemicals, soap ( that stops fish being able to breathe) - these things just ran out of pipes in the factory into streams, rivers, the sea (Even though there were dead fish no-one noticed)
- smoke came out of chimneys black, foul smelling, smoke; full of pollutants and poisins.
- barrels of poisonous waste were buried in the earth.

THEN, THEN, THEN, THEN
came my father, a doctor, and a few people like him.
In my town my father took a bus-load of factory owners into the country and showed them a pretty clear stream. Then he took them to look at the polutted dead fish in the waters near their factories. Then he introduced them to foreigners who wanted to buy the waste products.
Within one week over half the facory owners had changed things.
In Manchester a friend of my father's got it into the newspaper that he could prove that the weather would be nicer (less rain, more sun) if facory owners had less pollution soon families persuded the factory owners to change.
Another doctor, my father knew proved that ordinary town people were swallowing as much as a spoon of dust into their lungs from the chimney soot and again factory owners changed.
Soon other doctors and scientists began to do things.
Some scientists had already realised what was happening but no-one listened. BUT now doctors were showing these things affected HUMANS.
Because HUMANS are SELFISH, SELF-OPINIONATED, BASTARDS the public began to listen to the scientists.
BUT if it hadn't been for a few talented people like my father no-one would have listened to the scientists.
BUT do you know the name of my father, the name of the doctor in Manchester and those other clever doctors ?
NO you don't. Did they die rich? Definetely NOT, (my father did not even own his car)
Thes wonderful people did what they did - WHY?
Because it was their work, because they worked HARD; because they LOVED HUMANITY MORE than themselves; because they were NOT greedy or selfish, they did not want material possessions or money. They DID want humanity to CONTINUE. they wanted a BETTER WORLD
If you ever appreciate how much cleaner our world is now. If you ever appreciate how hard we now work to save YOUR environment give a silent THANK YOU to these wonderful. now dead, un-sung heroes please.
If you want to know more I'll put your name on my page and if you ask a question that begins 'Un-sung environmetal heroes.... ' I'll tell you more
