My old friend, Annie, and I used to be best friends, but we have grown apart. We have little in common anymore. I am optimistic, happy and positive. Annie has become very cynical, patronizing and condescending to me. And she acts as if she knows EVERYTHING. But I think that this is a result of low self esteem.

I have become extremely close with my friend, Marie. She and I are completely inseperable and have so much in common.

I think Annie's getting the hint that I am really more of best friends with Marie, but I think she doesn't want to believe it. She has recently been saying things like, "You know Olivie, I am fun to hang out with too. Tell Marie you're busy and need to hang out with me, your best friend."

The thing is though, she's NOT my best friend. Without hurting her feelings, I need to know what to do. Does she not understand that if we don't hang out, we don't talk on the phone, and we don't have anything in common ...why would she think that we're still best friends?

I don't want to tell you to avoid her, but she is already feeling that you are. It seems that way to me, too. Maybe you and Marie can figure out something to include her in and then maybe she will see why Marie is your best friend now. Invite another friend along that you think Annie will have more in common with than what she thinks she has in common with you...

Id say that all depends on how much you value the friendship... best or not

If by saying break it off as I think your implying, completely, Id say avoidance is the best option. After awhile she will catch on and than instead of a top spot of the friends list or even a spot for that matter... you can move her over to the other list under enemies =p

"People let me tell about my best friend... hes a warm hearted person that will love me until the end"

maybe you should try and help out your old friend a bit i mean as a person to another person in need wouldn't you feel better helping her out if her self esteem is down try and help her bring it up, no you don't have to be her therapist but you should give her a chance the key to any relationship is to communicate if she puts you down somehow tell her that it bothers you and if continues to do so then avoid her you two aren't a couple so you don't need to tell her "hey we need to talk" that is a little silly but if she does mention the whole "best friends" topic hell her that you have many close friends because you are free to do so and she is free to do the same good luck.

i had the same problem. it didnt end in the best way i just ended up prob hurting my friend. but sometimes people push you to the limit, they try to control you and think you are somehow betraying them by spending time with a friend you consider er...better. tell her you want to spend time with your other friend. nicely is hard i know.

then tell her the she is not your best friend... there's nothing wrong if you tell her... And she must understand you... She doesn't control your life as if she is your mother... She must risk for it..
